Meet Harsh Vardhan, Founder of Markigence, an advertising company for enterprises. Read on to learn about his entrepreneurial journey and his recent experience hiring for his Content and Digital Marketing teams via Digifynd.
What got you into the digital marketing domain?
I started italics, a content development agency, in 2006. During the initial few months, I was working with digital agencies and got intrigued by digital marketing. At that time, social media almost did not exist. All that was happening was on Google. I was fascinated with SEO and learnt on my own with help from friends. I experimented on my website and results started to pour in. That is when I realized that digital marketing can directly impact your revenue. It was in 2009, that I started with Markigence and Maruti Suzuki was one of our first clients. Since then, there has not been looking back.
How did Markigence start? What pushed you to start your own company?
It was an obvious extension of my skillset. I informally studied advertising as a hobby, largely through books and YouTube. When I started offering my skillset to clients and they tasted results, I started hiring and Markigence came to the fore. Money was not that good in back old days but digial marketing was exciting. Facebook was finding its way in the Indian market and Google was growing at a crazy rate. It was just obvious to expand on the lines.
How do you go about finding new projects for Markigence?
We were fortunate to have clients in italics who became our obvious targets. For new clients, we relied on SEO and Google Ads. Big clients however came from reference.
What’s the most exciting thing that has happened in your professional career?
Well, everything has been exciting in one way or the other. If I have to pick one it has to be working for Maruti Suzuki very early in the early years. It was a huge learning curve and opportunity to execute exciting ideas. We loved developing campaigns. We were a young team so putting in hard hours was not a challenge.
We are in 2020 and have seen multiple search algorithm updates by Google, one after another. How did you actually prepare your client’s websites for any new update? Did any of the websites you manage get adversely affected? How did you recover?
Fortunately, none of the websites we have worked on has ever been penalized by Google, so there has been no case of recovery. As far as SEO is concerned, for me, it comes from a decade of practice. Apart from algorithms, we need to understand what Google is trying to do – it is trying to think like a human. Learning algorithms is good, but you need to understand how Google would rank. Have high quality content and have a good GA hygiene. Results shall flow. Stay away from black hat.
Apart from their professional skills, what do you look for in the people you hire
Attitude and ownership are the two most important aspects. I am a kind of leader who likes to delegate authority as well. Markigence is my third venture in 10 years. My life revolves around interacting and managing people. Understanding people is my major role. I have learnt more about people than I could ever even in Tier 1 MBA school. I also look for the connect and if they would be a good fit in our culture. We are a flat organization and like to hire grounded people with aspirations.

Tell us a few interesting facts about yourself?
🙂 I meditate, read voraciously, netflix, and take philosophy as a refuge from the madding crowd. And yes, I love my scotch.
